Making Peer Connections And Tackling Isolation

Yesterday’s Sound Advice parent-teen workshop with Ellen Arthur, youth advisor to NDCS UK, brought together a group of mainstream-educated teens with hearing issues and their parents, to discuss solutions to recurring challenges that are encountered in school and local community environments.

Isolation at school does not mean you have no friends.

It can happen to anyone, and teens aren’t always mature enough to realise what it’s like to miss key bits of conversation [when a student doesn’t hear 100% of what is said in a group].

says Sound Advice’s youth person, Rebecca Dunne.

As a solution, mainstream education for students with hearing issues can benefit positively when schools proactively provide hearing-awareness teaching along with the relevant education supports”, says Ellen Arthur.

This event drew some media attention, with the Journal.ie running a piece (February 9th). Dublin City fm also interviewed Sound Advice’s Caroline Carswell by phone (February 11th), with a lip-speaker relaying the questions to Caroline, who spoke her answers to the phone. Podcast and transcript to follow.
