Advice For Deaf Students Going To Third Level

Monica Heck, a past student of journalism at DCU, wrote a feature piece on deaf students at third-level in Ireland, for DCU’s College View paper.

Each student will choose different supports at third-level. Some prefer speed-text (digital note-taking), or CART (ad verbatim note-taking), with a minority preferring sign-interpreters.

Ireland’s Deaf Pupils Are Mainstreamed

A notable error is in this piece; one student interviewed says not many deaf pupils in Ireland attend mainstream schools. In fact, 90% of Ireland’s deaf pupils are mainstream-educated today – or 3,370 in total (NCSE, 2011) thanks to digital hearing technologies and infant intervention for positive spoken language development before the first year of primary (elementary) school.
